Just before leaving England 29th June 2010

There would have been more stand-up photos but someone had her finger half over the flash.

At the Crown pub in Penn 28th June 2010

After dinner at the pub we went for a walk in the countryside behind it. There is a patch of nettles behind a field where every year peacock butterfly caterpillars are to be found munching away. This is one.

1929: Sep becomes a merchant seaman

Since almost all the photos of Sep in the Merchant Navy belong to 1929, I'm guessing that that is the year he joined the service, especially as some seem to have been sent to his mother.

This version was taken from the negative, which had gone darker over time.

Home Guard duty

During the Second World War, Sep was working at Saunders-Roe (Saro) in East Cowes. Here is a roster showing that for a while he was in charge of no. 3 Section. The pencilled amendments are in his handwriting.

Trade Union cards

Amongst the items are two union cards, dated 1949 and 1953. This is scanned from one of them.

A Saunders-Roe seaplane

As well as working at the aircraft company at East Cowes, Sep was always very interested in planes. He continued to visit the Farnborough Air Show every year he could.
